The next edition of the WWD podcast series is here and boy is it sweet! Coming to you courtesy of Nicolas Masseyeff, a Frenchman who’s released on the likes of Noir and Selador but found somewhat of a home on Herzblut Recordings. He smashed it with his Vero EP and he’s here to smash episode 012 for us today.
We caught up with Nico to chat to him about Vero, Herzblut and much more. Big thanks to Nico for stopping by and stepping up! Check out his mix and what he had to say below.
Enjoy!
Herzblut has been somewhat of a home for your music through the years. What is it that attracts you to produce music suitable for Stephan’s esteemed label?
- Herzblut is like my family label. Whenever I have a track that I think would fit the sound, I send it to Stephan Bodzin and then he lets me know. I really like how Jan and Stephan are managing the label. Nothing is complicated, everything is out for love of the music.
Your latest Vero release came out on Herzblut recently. What was the inspiration behind the tracks, Vero in particular, and how did you go about it? Was it a long process?
- Vero is a very special track to me, because I produced it during a period in which I was going through a rough and painful time. So I only wanted to do music with melodies that could portray very intense emotions. That is when Vero was born… It actually did not take much time to finish this track.
The one piece of studio equipment you can’t go without and why?
- This is a very good question. I guess if you asked me the same thing a few months back, I would have without doubt said that the TR 909 is my favourite piece of equipment. However, I sold it a few weeks back, because I was not really using it so much, so I thought it deserved a better life. Now it is in the studio of a friend of mine, who is working with it like hell. So currently I would say that my most favourite instrument is a small synth called Micro Modular, produced by Clavia. I got it in 2000 and I love doing pads and strings with it. For example, I did the strings for Vero with it – such a small yet powerful synth.
One thing you simply cannot live without while touring/travelling to gigs?
- Just one? Well, then this would be my laptop. I just love it, cause then I can listen to music when travelling, classifying new demos, preparing for my gigs… I love to listen to music when flying, somehow I find it very inspiring.
Tell us a bit about the mix you’ve put together for us? Is it something we could expect to hear you playing in clubs these days or have you gone for something different?
- This mix is a selection of tracks that I personally like to listen to and some that I love to play. It is not something different than what I usually do, but I am generally very eclectic and I love to play different tracks each time. I can actually play from deep house to techno, cause I like to create a journey with my set.
Any unreleased productions from yourself in there?
- Nah, there is nothing unreleased inside. But I have some new productions in the pipeline planned for 2015.
1 track that is killing it for you right now?
- Not sure, if I am allowed to give it out, but let’s do it. It is a track by Stephan Bodzin. It will be included in this forthcoming album and it is a track called « … ». He is not only my dear friend, but he is really such a genius. It has been a long time since I heard such an emotional tune….
Plans for the coming months? Studio? Gigs? Dublin?!
- Yes, I have a lot on my plate actually. I am really looking forward to Singapore next month. Will be playing at the Zouk Out After Hours on the beach… I have a new release with my buddy Oxia scheduled for early 2015, I am also working on a new remix. When it comes to Dublin, there is nothing planned yet, but would love to come there.
Dublin promoters take note. Melodic, we’re looking at you!
