The latest edition of the Select Cuts series welcomes Javier Orduña, one of the most promising producers on the horizon right now. Not only has he impressed the key individuals at Brachtune/Visionquest and at Guy Gerber’s Supplemental Facts but he’s also earned the backing of House & Tech veteran Steve Lawler, who snapped up Orduña’s standout Black Mirror release for his very own Viva Music. What’s more, Javier continues his rich vein of form this month teaming up with New Violence Records for a stomping three tracker, which also features the talents of Denite in a remix capacity. We caught up with Javier this week to find out just how he does it!
WWD : Thanks for joining us Javier! How are you doing this week?
Hi guys. First of all, thanks for this interview and mix for your great site….
This week I’m working on the second track for a split Ep for Culprit with Upercent. Andrei from Culprit liked one of the tracks we sent him for his label so he asked us for another and that’s what I’m focused on right now.
Also I have just finished the mixdowns of my split Ep with Alexi Delano, that will see the light soon…(stay tuned…) and I’m making some new arrangements in one of my last tracks that I made for Brachtune & Visionquest with my friend Ludovic Vendi.
WWD : The follow up to Black Mirror, a release we loved btw, is here! You’ve a new EP coming soon on New Violence Records, what can you tell us about that?
Well, I’ll try and give you the short version of the story….!
After my Ep on Viva Music was released, Chris the owner of NVR contacted me and asked if I could work on an EP for his label….I loved how Chris was managing his label, his humility and how he made me feel like one of the family. We spoke on Skype and email and we really hit it off, so I felt like this was the right place to release my next EP.
The process has been very collaborative and creative because it was not just a case of handing over the tracks. Chris & I have spent a lot of time exchanging ideas on what could make the tracks better. As a result I’m really happy with the way the music has turned out.
WWD : NVR is a label really impressing at the moment. It is still so young and having signed to establish outfits like Supplemental Facts and Sincopat, what was it about New Violence that caught your eye?
The label is really young but already it is working very well. The music, artists, artwork and vision is very good and this is why I wanted to work with NVR. I’m also working on another EP for NVR with my friends WISH & CONSYN that will be released later in the year with a very special remix and also another EP for NVR’s soon-to-launch sister label Nightcolours, which has a remix from INXEC.
WWD : What can you tell us about the production and creative processes behind the tracks?
Well, these tracks were made in some dark days, but good days. I was working from midday until 7am the following day mainly because no one could disturb me at night!
The process of making music for me is not always very easy and it often takes me a longer than probably necessary because I’m not a trained musician and it can be difficult to translate what’s going on in my head! I also use a lot of analog hardware so it I spend a lot of time recording and then changing the MIDI in Cubase. Not the smoothest of workflows!!
WWD : You’ve very kindly put together a little mix for us. What will one find in there?
You will find a lot of upcoming tracks like the Guy Gerber rmx for Art Department, or the last Miguel Lobo tracks, and for sure deep and freaky classic house sounds, I love all the raw, pure and analog house tunes and the new melodic and deep stuff…
I’m not the Dj that plays the Beatport top ten, or famous dj charts, I like something more than just a good groove, I love the freaky things and for sure every tune I play has some nice soul in it.
WWD : Looking down the line, where can we catch you over the coming months?
You will find me playing at Stardust Club (Madrid) and 404 Club with Pablo Bolivar and Upercent and maybe for the anniversary of the label Intimate Project in New York.
WWD : And is there more new music in the pipeline?
Yes, the Split Ep with Alexi Delano, a Rmx for Fanzine Records, my Supplement Facts release, another Ep for New Violence Records, a special vinyl Ep for AMAM Records, the label of my bro Alessio Mereu, where It will be a Ep called JAVIER ORDUNA AND FRIENDS, and there will be 4 Split Tracks with artist like Upercent, Alexi Delano, Alessio Mereu, and…..surprise. So plenty lined up for the summer!
