After a short stop-off in Dublin, the Residents Series takes us on to Liverpool! Time to sit down with Lewis Boardman, resident at Circus, the world renowned party hosted by Yousef, Rich McGinnis and co.
Now a well establish spinner and respected producer with records signed on the likes of Play it Down, 8bit, Cadenza and Desolat, Boardman takes us back in time to talk us through the early days and his breakout success before informing us of all that’s to come over the next few months. As is tradition, he’s provided an exclusive mix just for When We Dip readers. It’s all below!
WWD: Thanks for joining us Lewis!
Where are you right now and what has been on the schedule this week?
I’m at home in Liverpool after a busy week in the office finishing bookings for the winter and a few late nights finishing tracks in my home studio. Then I’m off out for dinner for my Birthday.
WWD: Your residency at Circus is quite the mark of respect. How did the opportunity come about?
The old-fashioned way, I really wanted to get involved in all aspects of the club business. So I started at the very bottom. I approached Yousef and Rich McGinnis who had just started a small house night called Circus, I said I really wanted to be involved and wanted to learn how to put together events. I started the next day I think, handing out flyers and putting up posters, before building up the courage to hand them a mix cd.
I think the cd was called the rum sessions; I still have a copy somewhere. They really liked it and gave me a warm up slot in room 3 and about 30 of my friends turned up and caused havoc in the old front bar! It was an amazing time for me and the start of Circus. From there I slowly built a little vibe and then moved onto to warm up in room 2 (The Loft) and then room 1 (The Theatre) warming up or the major DJs.
WWD: Has it provided a good platform for you to develop your career?
An unbelievable one, I’ve learned so much from both artists, clubbers, designers and both Rich and Yousef. Things are really starting to work out for me now and it’s all from learning my craft at Circus.
WWD: What makes the vibe there so special?
Its 100% the crowd, everyone really lets loose at Circus. They trust us to bring the best parties we can to the City and push new exciting acts through from The Loft to The Theatre to even now some acts that played in The Bar at Circus are now festival headliners!
WWD: Have you guys got any parties coming up?
We have a residents party in The Shipping Forecast for 200 people in a sweaty basement. Then onto Carl Cox at Space in Ibiza, and finishing off we have a special party in The Palm House in Liverpool where we hosted last year’s amazing Boiler Room party.
WWD: Tell us about your work with Jesse Rose and the Play it down crew!
Jesse is amazing! I’ve been a huge fan of his for many years, I still remember buying one of his first tracks on ‘Front Room Records’ from HMV in Liverpool and to now have my music out on his label is dope. The great thing about Jesse is he always has time to give you feedback, this is really important and helps new and up and coming producers massively. Big up Jesse!!!
WWD: Who are the guys that have impressed you behind the decks?
Richy Ahmed and Matthias Tanzmann. Both amazing DJs and rocked Circus last year.
WWD: In your eyes, what are the key ingredients for the ideal warm-up?
Patience, Patience, Patience. Read your crowd and take your time A little foreplay first 😉
WWD: Can you give us an insight into your recent studio endeavours? It seems like things are picking up nicely. What have you got in the pipeline?
I’ve been busy working on my beats, coming soon I have tracks out on 8*bit / Circus Recording and just finishing a few EP’s for a few of my favourite labels.
WWD: Three best moments of your summer so far?
Dc10! Dc10! Dc10!
