Lost & Found boss Guy J has had an incredible run of late. The underground powerhouse has dropped a lethal new two track EP on his own imprint and it arrives just a few months ahead of the very first edition of his Amsterdam-based festival (May 12th). Talking with When We Dip this week, he takes us through the development of the L&F label, the inspiration behind entering the festival game and lots more…
WWD : Hi Guy J, thanks for sitting down with us for a chat today! Where are you in the world right now? And what’s happened so far in your day?
I’m at home today and rebuilding my studio! Diving in a sea of cables and trying to connect everything right 🙂
WWD : After a big EP last September on Bedrock, you are back on your own imprint with ‘Aurora/Airbone EP’. Can you tell us about the inspiration behind the release?
The inspiration behind the release is the days of trance music that inspired me a lot while growing in Tel Aviv, Airborne and Aurora both are very musical and i think both have a different vibe that you can feel through the music in them.
WWD : You chose to release via your own label on this occasion, what factors influence your choice of imprint?
I want Lost & Found to be channel of quality music rather then a label that focusses on one genre, and of course I chose music that I love a lot and play at my gigs 🙂 There is so much music coming out everyday and I think it’s hard to find music that stands out, most of it sounds the same as there is not real “music” involved in it. Thats why I love it when I get music from amazing producers that are so talented and believe that Lost & Found is a place to release unique tracks.
WWD : For artists in the modern era the label game is ever-growing in popularity, what do you think are the most challenging aspects to operating your own imprint?
The challenge is to find good music and also not to follow what is trendy now, I think a lot of labels are kind of stuck in only one genre so you know what you get there. Which might be good but can be boring also after a while..
WWD : You decided to launch your own festival that will take place May 12th in Amsterdam. Can you tell us a bit about your motivation behind this new challenge?
I think its the right time to do it, in the last 2 years there were successful Lost & Found nights around the world and I think with the producers/DJ’s released on the label till now we are able to bring a bigger and more special event together.
The difference between a label night and the festival is that we will be able to bring also DJs that are not related to the label so it will be nice addition to the music that the label is familiar with.
WWD : Where will Lost & Found innovate in 2018?
Like mentioned in the last Q, the festival is the next step and also there is more great music coming out this year, there is solid plan of whats gonna come out and I think you going to like it 🙂
WWD : You are also starting a USA tour at the end of February. Travelling is of course an essential part of the DJ life. Does it impact on trying balance the other aspects of your life?
I think the time away from home is something that makes you appreciate home more and enjoy more the time at home.
Besides the inspiration for music when I travel it’s also a gift for life to see the world, it makes your knowledge about culture and life more rich and can sometimes help you deal better with whats around you.
WWD : Cheers for speaking to us today Guy J, we’ll see you at We Are Lost Festival !
C you there 🙂
