When it comes to eclectic CVs, few of those in the house game can compare to EDED’s. As A&R of the ever-popular Moodmusic imprint, Ed has also found a home for his music on some of the underground’s best and most cherished labels, chief among them Get Physical (where his next release, a brilliant remix of the classic ‘I Get Deep’ will feature), Defected offshoot DFTD, Watergate Records and Pan Pot’s Second State. And that’s just a few of them! With the aforementioned release coming at us soon, we thought it a good time to put some quick questions to the Berlin man about his plans for the foreseeable future. Much like his music, his answers are intriguing, and we’re very much looking forward to hearing much more from Ed in 2021. What’s more, he’s also done a mix for us, which you can check out here.
WWD: How has this year been, what’s good and bad about it?
Hi there, well the good things first ….more studio time and more me time – also being able to reflect more on life and spending more time with a few close friends. Also improving my cooking skills for sure 😉 I still travelled a lot where possible Morocco, Portugal, Zanzibar and this new home office culture has certainly helped. The bad of course no clubs and festivals which have all been cancelled and also feeling the pain of all jobs lost in the industry obviously. A lot of friends and fellow artists are struggling so that is quite a heavy burden. But keep my spirits high and hope for the best.
WWD: Did you use the free time wise to learn new skills or make new music?
Yes – the release plan is full until the end of the year so I’m really looking forward to that. I have a release coming on the Studi Kreuzberg label, Remixed by Acid Pauli. I have a remix for “ I get Deep” coming at the end of November and also a Remix for Geju & Acid Pauli in December…and some more to come for next year.
WWD: Is it hard to make club music without being in a club?
Well it’s more challenging. If you play a lot and spend time in clubs you do get a lot of inspiration and spontaneous ideas – plus you can test your track and adjust some things if you see you need some mixing or change the arrangement. Now it’s you against yourself in your studio so to speak. So yes I would say I need to readjust and also try some slower tunes and look for different ways to keep the club spirit going.
WWD: What is the dark art of A&R? What are you looking for, more than just music?
Well it’s quite easy. Know what sound you want and look for very good production skills and sound that fits your vision and label.
WWD: Can you spot potential as well as just a good tune from someone?
Yes – there are no guarantees but if you receive 2-3 good tunes from an artist there is a high probability of potential.
WWD: What is the record or artist you are most proud of signing?
Signing Georgia Anguli before she got big.
WWD: What impact did Berlin have on your sound? Did it influence what you like to make and play?
Well before the clubbing days where over yes indeed – very big influence on me…Watergate, Sisyphos, Chalet, Katerblau – that’s just so much influence from people and clubbing – really made my music go in a different direction.
WWD: Are illegal raves returning a good or bad thing? Is it irresponsible ? What do you think of Corona?
I’m going to trust the Government on that one. No hoax for me at the moment. I can’t judge the harshness of all restrictions but of course I am as frustrated and thoughtful like everybody else. I think if the raves are handled correctly / Open Air and have a limited capacity this should be a fair and safe deal for everyone involved.
WWD: Tell us about your latest one for Get Physical – what inspired it?
Roland Clark’s “I Get Deep” was always a track I wanted to remix and give it more deep / techno vibe. You have to judge if I actually got that right 😉
WWD: What are you looking forward to?
To all upcoming releases this year and beginning of next year – and also the time when we can all party together again.
WWD: What do you miss most about normal life and DJ life?
Of course playing at clubs and festivals and hearing my tracks being playing by other DJs in the club.
Keep up with EDED on Facebook and Soundcloud. EDED’s remix of Roland Clark’s I Get Deep is out soon via Get Physical.
