After launching in 2019, Baikal Nomads has found its place as a leading imprint within the organic house scene and its founder Chingis has taken some time to tell us more about the imprint.
Baikal Nomads is an organic house record label that has featured music from the likes of Guy Maayan, Jean Vayat, Zuma Dionys, Thommie G and Mula (FR). Although the core of its sound focuses on organic house, the record label has eclectic influences that also take inspiration from downtempo and deep tech along with other genres.
Enjoy this great interview with Chingis.
WWD: Hi Chingis, could you start by telling us when you set up Baikal Nomads and how you would describe the sound/style of the record label?
Hi! First of all, thank you for invitation to do this interview, I’m a big fan of When We Dip! So, the story of Baikal Nomads started in 2013 when I was in Thailand. In the beginning it was just a SoundCloud page with my mixes in deep/progressive house styles. But with the support of my friends, that page grew into a record label with organic house/downtempo/deep tech vibes. We don’t just release those genres, as music always flows and changes and we are open to new sounds and styles.
WWD: What’s been your proudest moment running Baikal Nomads?
I grew up in Siberia and I think the proudest moment for me, was our showcase in Tulum last year. Looking back, it was a moment where we got to see our years of hard work start to pay off. Baikal Nomads was one of the first record labels from Eastern Europe and all of Asia to host a party in Tulum. We booked Mula from France to play at the event, as his track “Acid Baikal” is still one of Baikal Nomads’ top selling releases.
WWD: Is there a specific release or track that you think helped Baikal Nomads break through to a new level of success?
Definitely, it is our VA ‘Badarchin’ that features tracks from a mix of artists new and old. It’s often where we introduce new talent and the releases are always very popular. We have now done 6 releases in the series, but the first one was in 2019.
WWD: Who are some of the main artists in the Baikal Nomads roster, and are there any new signings that have got you really excited?
Artists who always do well on the label include Mula (FR), Alex Doering, the Oddness, Thommie G and Zuma Dionys. In the next few months, we are excited to release a collaboration between Juliano Gomez and Kapoor, which should be a bomb 😉
WWD: Are you also a music producer, and do you try to make artists exclusive to Baikal Nomads?
No, I don’t produce tracks myself, but we sign a lot of new talent and I’m more than happy when I see those guys get signed to other well-known record labels. It’s a fantastic feeling to know we helped them on their journey!
WWD: Can you tell us about the label’s latest release, and what is coming up next?
The latest release is a three track EP by a Mexican producer called Demian Lara aka Prismatica. I like it so much, as it’s very groovy! The next release will be out in December and it’s a remix album by Dreamstalker who is a co-founder of a big online Ableton school. The remixes are from his best students on his courses. We chose the remixes together and it took a long time to make the final selections, as there are so many talents. After the remix release, we definitely want to continue working with them.
WWD: Which are some of the other record labels that you respect or take inspiration from?
We try to have our own individual sound, but there are lots of record labels that I love and I’m always discovering new music from multiple sources. Some of my current favourite record labels include Bar 25, Monada, Shango and Down rec.
WWD: What do you look for when deciding which new tracks to sign, and what’s the best way for people to get in contact with unsigned music?
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly what I look for in a track, as each track is its own individual thing. The most important thing is the desire to listen again, as that means it has something memorable or different. We try our best to listen to all demos and people can send their music to: [email protected]
WWD: Thanks for talking with us!
Thanks for the interview, it was a pleasure answering the questions.
