Renowned Spanish producer, DJ, and Beatfreak label boss D-Formation once again surprises the electronic scene with the release of his highly anticipated new album, ‘Nine Forms’ —a special project commemorating the 400th release of his label, Beatfreak Recordings.

This work not only marks a milestone in his career but also serves as a tribute to more than two decades of pushing electronic music forward through an independent and cutting-edge platform. With ‘Nine Forms,’ D-Formation pays homage to his most authentic vision of music: “A form of expression without filters, without following trends or formulas, the artist states.

The album consists of nine tracks, each born from a collaboration with outstanding artists such as Alex Medina, Nihil Young, GRAZZE, Darksidevinyl, Masella, Blueheist, and Andrew Sar. Through these collaborations, the album embarks on a nuanced sonic journey that moves between indie, melodic, and progressive house, always from a deeply personal approach.

You can now listen to the full premiere of D-Formation & Nihil Young’s ‘Set You Free’ and read our exclusive interview with the boss himself where we discuss all things album, the collaborations and how they came to be, what’s next for the label, and more. Enjoy!

WWD: ‘Nine Forms’ celebrates the 400th release of Beatfreak Recordings. How does it feel to reach such a significant milestone in your career and the label’s history?

It’s a hard feeling to put into words. It’s been many years of hard work, passion, and consistency. Reaching the 400th release isn’t just a number-it’s the reflection of a story built with love and dedication to music. Seeing how Beatfreak has become a reference label worldwide makes me incredibly proud, and I wanted to celebrate it with something truly special.

WWD: At what point did you know you wanted to mark this moment with a collaborative album? What made it special for you?
From the very beginning, I knew this release had to be different. I thought: what better way to celebrate than by surrounding myself with artists I admire and with whom I share a real musical connection? I wanted it to be a shared celebration, not just mine, and a reflection of the creative community that has grown around Beatfreak.

WWD: You describe the album as an expression free from filters or trends. What does it mean to create with that kind of total freedom nowadays, in a music industry so shaped by algorithms and trends?

For me, creating with total freedom is about returning to the essence-to the roots. Nowadays, it’s easy to fall into the trap of following formulas that work on social media or streaming platforms just because they’re trendy. But that doesn’t always connect with what you truly feel. This album was my way of disconnecting from all of that and letting myself be guided purely by the music and my emotions, without worrying about algorithms or statistics.

WWD: What elements would you say define your sonic essence, and how are they reflected in Nine Forms?

My sound has always been marked by depth, energy, and a certain darkness. I love working with immersive atmospheres, powerful basslines, and constantly evolving structures. In Nine Forms, I tried to maintain that essence in every track, even when working with very different artists. There’s a sense of coherence and connection behind each one.

WWD: The album features artists like Alex Medina, Nihil Young, GRAZZE, Darksidevinyl, Andrew Sarl, Blueheist, and Masella. How did you select these collaborators, and what were you looking for in each of them?

The selection process was very organic. These are artists I had worked with before or with whom I shared

mutual respect and admiration. I was looking for authenticity-for each one to bring their own universe while still staying connected to mine. I wanted every track to feel like a musical conversation, not just a blend of styles.

WWD: Was there any collaboration that came about unexpectedly or spontaneously?

Yes, the collaboration with Alex Medina was the last one to happen. Interestingly, we spent over two weeks together in India, and from there our friendship and musical vision really solidified. It’s grown into something that won’t stop with just this collaboration-we actually have a big project in the works, involving another artist from the album. But that’s something we’ll reveal together at the right time.

WWD: Each track retains the identity of the collaborator, but there’s also a clear narrative. How did you maintain that balance between unity and sonic diversity?

It was a very intentional process. In every track, I made sure the essence of each collaborator could shine, but always with a strong guiding thread. I’ve always aimed to stay true to the styles I deeply connect with, and I think we managed to ensure that each track feels like a true collaboration while fitting into the album’s overall journey.

WWD: Tell us a funny story from the production process of one of the tracks.

In one of the studio sessions, we accidentally recorded the sound of a phone vibrating on the table-and it ended up becoming part of the groove. We processed it so much that it’s barely noticeable now, but every time I hear that part, I can’t help but laugh.

WWD: Which track was the most challenging to produce and why?

I’d say the most challenging was the one I did with GRAZZE. Even though we’ve worked together many times before, we come from very different sonic backgrounds. For this track, we wanted to do something different from what we’re used to. Finding that middle ground took longer than usual, but that’s exactly what gave the track so much character. Sometimes the hardest ones turn out to be the most rewarding.

WWD: What do you take away from this collaborative project on a personal and professional level?

On a personal level, I walk away with a great sense of fulfillment. Working with so many talented artists, sharing ideas, and respecting different creative visions-it’s been an incredibly enriching experience. Professionally, I feel like Nine Forms allowed me to show a more open and versatile side of my work. It’s pushed me to keep evolving and exploring new paths.

WWD: Are there plans to present ‘Nine Forms’ in a special format? How will you bring it to life in your live sets?

Yes, I’m preparing a series of special shows where I’ll present the album in a more immersive way. I want the audience to really feel the energy of the project. It won’t just be about playing the tracks-it’ll be about telling a story through sound.

WWD: What’s next for Beatfreak Recordings and for you after this major milestone?

For Beatfreak, the journey continues with more strength than ever. We want to keep supporting emerging artists and maintain that balance between the cutting edge and the emotional side of electronic music. Personally, I already have several new projects underway, new collaborations, and I’m also exploring ideas beyond the studio-always tied to the music industry, of course. This celebration marks a key moment, but it’s also a new beginning.

WWD: It really is! Congrats on the milestone and stunning album! Thanks for the chat 🙂
