Few names carry the weight that Oliver Huntemann does in techno. For more than two decades, the Hamburg producer has shaped the genre with a sound built on precision, restraint and a relentless sense of forward motion, and on his own Senso Sounds imprint he continues to set the standard for the music he helped define. His latest, ‘Brutal’, lives up to its name without ever raising its voice.
‘Brutal’ is an uncompromising, powerful track that leans into tension rather than release. It distributes pressure with a steady low-end pulse and tightly coiled percussion, while fragments of Spanish vocals drift through the arrangement like a mantra. ‘Sin principio, ni final, todo arde, sin igual’ repeats with a detached intensity as the bassline keeps pushing forward without ever tipping into excess. ‘No beginning, no end, everything burns, like nothing else. No beginning, no end, the bass beats, brutal’. There is a raw physicality to the track, letting the small details in the groove do the work.
The release also features an instrumental version that shifts the focus entirely onto the mechanics underneath, bringing out the weight of the drums and the subtle movement inside the synth layers. Both versions feel precise and unforced, with a sense of restraint that gives the record its stunning character.
Senso Sounds has long been Oliver Huntemann’s home for finest underground dance music, a Hamburg based imprint whose careful curation has become a hallmark of forward thinking techno. With dozens of releases under its belt, the label remains a trusted destination for those who value detail and discipline over noise, and ‘Brutal’ is another sharp addition to that catalogue.
