We were lucky enough to catch Not Squares supporting Two Door Cinema Club back in the beloved and sorely missed Tripod in 2010. Put simply, their live show blew our mind and surpassed all expectations. Having gone to the gig to catch the Bangor Boys who have now risen to international stardom (TDCC), this trio from Belfast rocked Tripod with a pulsating live set which certainly warmed the crowd up.
Featuring tracks off their debut album the crowd were treated to an energetic live set which included the madness of ‘Asylum’ and the raw power and intensity of ‘Release The Bees’. It was a live set which forced us, and I’m sure many others alike, to go out and buy Yeah Ok!
Following Yeah Ok! came a bit of a lull for the trio before releasing Fall Far and Hey You in 2012. Packed full of synths and electronic goodness they could only please the ear and excite the listener about the prospects that lie ahead for Not Squares.
Those prospects are looking a lot brighter and certainly coming to realization with the release of this latest installment, Simpler Vibe. It’s an exciting track playing true to the Not Squares’ style with the ever present synths and electronic waves . But with catchy vocals, nice stabs, plenty of reverb and a nice driving arp to bring the track towards it’s close, this production really has it all. A superb piece of work from the trio and we hope to hear a lot more from Not Squares sooner rather than later.
