The summer buzz is kicking in big time here at WWD HQ and it’s being fueled by some top notch recent releases. This includes the new record from talented Hamburg duo Piemont, who’ve dropped a fine two track EP on Area Remote. These boys have been crafting tracks since 2007 and have already featured on the likes of Monika Kruse’s Terminal M, MBF and Brighton label Skint Records. Their latest release, the ‘Unvoiced EP’, continues a run of quality tunes which have been garnering them more and more attention. For us, their style, personally labelled ‘organic techno’, is a breath of fresh air in the current musical environment. We couldn’t resist finding out more. It’s all below, enjoy!
WWD: Hi guys, great to have you in hotseat! Where are you at the moment? What have you been up to this week?
We are at home right now but will head to Berlin for a gig in a couple minutes. This week have been busy with different productions – amongst others a remix for german duo ‘Hanne & Lore‘. Moreover, we have just been enjoying sunny days 🙂
WWD: Excited for the summer? Any big plans?
We have some exciting gigs confirmed this summer – especially looking forward the open air gigs. Furthermore, it looks like we are finally going to start to work on our third full length album, music wise.
WWD: The new EP on Area Remote has gone down very well at WWD HQ. What can you tell us about the EP? Where did you put in all the work?
Great to hear you guys like the EP!
We have been following Area Remote‘s music since many years and have always wanted to release an EP on the label. During last year‘s Amsterdam Dance Event we met all the guys from the label at a dinner ahead of a gig at Studio80. Two days later we spontaneously fired over
some demo tunes and they got back to us and signed these immediately.
We are really into a jackin and rough house sound at the moment and were listening to a lot of old school house lately. These two tracks are definitely a result of our current musical preference 🙂
On this EP we have sampled lots of vintage stuff from the late sixties and we have put more time and efford into the beats. No analogue equipment was used this time!
WWD: It’s got quite a summer vibe to it, was it a strategic release? just in time for summer 2014?
The tunes were produced in November last year and the summerish vibes of the tunes were just ‘created‘ by pure chance. However, it is perfect to have the EP released just in time for summer 2014 🙂
WWD: What’s your work process like? do you prefer big blocks of time in the studio or do you produce on the go, week in week out?
After having spent many years together in the studio and after all those gigs we have played, our creativity has become more and more symbiotic. In other words, each of us doesn‘t take care of certain creative things. The creative part is done by both of us. We produce the idea and arrange the tracks together. As we have small studios at home we often look for track elements at home by ourselves and bring them to the studio next day. Sometimes one of us produces a track independently. Then people then can‘t say from whom it was written. It just sounds like Piemont 🙂 Frederic usually takes care of mixdown and mastering issues though.
We aren‘t much into spending big blocks of time in studio. Typically,
we need around two weeks for one production.
WWD: Anyone you’d like to share a bill with in the coming months?
Definitely the ‘man of the hour‘ Pharrell Williams.
WWD: One name to make it big this summer?
Dixon!
WWD: What can we expect from Piemont in the coming months? Can we look forward to more new music?
We have some really exciting releases coming up the next month. First of all we‘ll release an EP on a very promising label called ‘With Compliments‘ which is a sublabel of ‘Get Physical‘. It has just been launched and will release music by a bunch of very great artists.
Moreover, we‘ve just signed a tracks to Toolroom Trax and Material.
