Todh Teri is back with a brand-new chapter.

‘The Return of Neela Devi’ kicks off a vinyl-only series where the iconic characters from Deep In India finally take center stage. With the Sampadan era behind us, a bold new sound is rising.

Leading the way is Neela Devi herself, across three genre-spanning tracks that cover everything from vintage disco to spaced-out synths and slow-burning indie dance. There’s something here for every kind of listener – the groover, the dreamer, and the deep digger.

Off the back of his new release, we have the pleasure of catching up with Todh to talk through the 12”, his deep connections with the music, his creative process and more!

WWD: Hey Todh Teri, great to meet you. How’re you today?

I am very well, thank you, hope the same for you.

WWD: Congratulations on releasing ‘The Return Of Neela Devi.’ Talk us through the release…

Thanks a lot! It’s been a fun ride putting this release together, both writing and conceptualizing it. After ‘Deep in India’ wrapped up, we – Masala Movement, took a short break to rethink the label’s direction and explore new ways to move forward. I already had a bunch of tracks ready, so we decided to launch a new series based on the character from ‘Deep In India’ volumes 6–10, giving both the character and the tracks a fresh identity and name.

WWD: Where did you grow up and how did that environment shape your relationship with music?

I grew up on this planet just like everyone else. For me, it’s music that shapes the environment, not the other way around. My connection with it runs deep, right to the core and honestly, it’s something words can’t fully express.

WWD: What’s the first memory you have of making music?

I began learning basic Tabla (Indian drums) and Harmonium (Indian wind organ) around the age of seven, I guess that counts as “making music” 🙂

WWD: When you think back to your earliest projects, what’s something you would do differently now?

The past is behind us, but it teaches us how to grow and improve whether by learning from mistakes or simply doing things differently, as you mentioned. Still, I believe in being in the present and focusing on what the current creative process is, because once you start thinking back and see how good some tracks where, despite lack of knowledge and now you know too much, but still do not sound that good, like how you did in the past, it can ruin a lot for the present.

WWD: What’s the scene like in your city?I find it difficult when people say ‘yours’ or ‘mine.’ We’re all guests here, nothing truly belongs to us. With that understanding, I may not be able to answer this question in the way you expect.

WWD: Can you share some insight into your creative process when producing music? Do you have any particular rituals or methods that help you stay inspired?‍

There is no process, there is just music. I often do everything that’s considered ‘not right’ to create something that feels right. I let the synthesizers, and the tools guide me. Faith in what you’re doing isn’t just integral, it’s the only thing that truly matters in the creative process. You dive so deep into the world of sound / creativity that, eventually, you disappear… and only the music remains.

“Creativity is the greatest rebellion in existence.”

— Osho

WWD: When you are not busy with music, what might we find you doing?

Cycling,Workout, Yoga, Meditation, Cooking and re-charging my body and mind.

WWD: Finally, what do you have coming up in the next few months? Feel free to mention anything!

I wish I knew the future, once i do i will definitely inform the world via my social network 🙂

WWD: We’ll keep an eye out! Thanks for the chat 🙂
